Many Afghani refugees returning to their homeland in recent years, mostly from Pakistan, are struggling to make a living and to cope with their new surroundings, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). English


One family faces the cold winter with UN assistance

30 December 2008 - “I was in the first position of my class at school right through until grade eight when I was 15 until the Taliban came and closed everything down. We had to flee to Pakistan just to survive and make a living,” said Bahram Jaji, 27, an Afghan refugee who returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan seven years ago to live a normal life again in his homeland. So far Bahram has lived through six daunting winters and faces another harsh one ahead. English


Winter aid for more than 30,000 vulnerable Afghan families

UN envoy calls on all Afghans to say “no” to corruption

Speaking at Amani high school in Kabul where President Karzai and other senior members of the Afghan government were present, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General Kai Eide said:“Corruption is not an Afghan phenomenon. UN envoy urges revision of detention, search and air attack tactics
17 December 2008 - The top United Nations official in Afghanistan today called for a revision of the agreement between the Government and international military forces on detention, house searches and the use of air power, which has led to the deaths of many civilians. English
